My name is Edmund Liao and I am a Project Manager in the Global Project Management Department, based in the Linical Osaka office. Before I came to the Linical headquarters in Osaka, I was working in Taiwan for Global CRO and Pharmaceutical Companies for 9 years in clinical operation and project management roles. It is very exciting to work for a global CRO which is originally from Asia as most of the global CROs are originally from Europe and the U.S. We would like to demonstrate that Linical is not only a successful, global CRO but also derived from Asian philosophy.

As a Project Manager, my responsibility is to ensure every party provides their resource and deliverables on time in different countries and companies to meet the project timeline. In terms of timeline, this means the cost and final goal of our sponsors, so our responsibility is to keep to the whole timeline and deliver the final data so that this can be accurately presented for NDA approval. To reach this goal, we need to define our needs clearly to each party in different departments, countries and companies and ensure their responses to our needs are delivered on time. Sometimes I communicate in Japanese, English and Mandarin language at the same time, which teaches me how important the cultural differences in communication are because each language has its characteristics. Efficient communication is key to clearly explain to each and every contact so that they understand any urgency and the importance of their role in each clinical trial to meet the overall timelines.

People talk about the importance of cultural differences and how to best deal with communication involving multiple languages and backgrounds. I also think it is very important, that we try to find common points to start this communication. The basic human needs are similar no matter which language we are using; integrity, passion, desire for knowledge and success. This is the starting point to create our Asian project management team which includes Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese and German personnel. On the other hand, we embrace the different perspectives from people with different backgrounds to enrich our idea pool for innovation. I am very excited about the development of Linical in the near future to become a TOP 10 Global CRO from Asia.
